Although having ruled justly and wisely over the kingdom of heaven for countless years, The Heavenly Emperor was never afforded the time to visit the kingdom of earth personally. Eventually, he grew curious as to what the creatures of the earth looked like. The leaders of the animals were surprised to find that they had received invitations to visit the Emperor in the Kingdom of Heaven. The cat, being the most handsome of all animals, asked his friend the rat to wake him on the day they were to go to Heaven so that he wouldn't oversleep. The rat, however, was worried that he would seem ugly compared to the cat, and did not wake his friend. Consequently, the cat missed the meeting with the Heavenly Emperor and was denied the favor of heaven. The Heavenly Emperor was delighted with the animals and not only decided to divide the years up amongst them, but also bestowed upon them great power.
What became of the animals and their power, and what became of the empire they forged; that is another story altogether.
